How to humanize an AI-assisted research paper and keep every fact
What worked when we humanized a real 16-page research paper, step by step, with the scores.
Why research papers are hard
Detectors flag AI-written papers less for single words than for how the text is packed: a new claim or number in every sentence, related work written one paper per sentence, tidy summary lines, and the same polished finish everywhere. A rewriter that only swaps words keeps all of that. In our tests on 15 October 2026, word-swapping paraphrasers and back-translation left the same paper section at 100% AI on GPTZero.
Let your AI agent do it
If you use an AI agent such as Claude Code, Codex or Cursor, download the AI playbook for research papers and give it to the agent with your notes and references. The agent asks what you need, plans the paper, drafts it, humanizes it with Penned and builds the final PDF or Word file with a script, so the humanized text is never retyped by hand.
The workflow by hand
- Draft with the research-paper prompt. Copy the research-paper prompt into ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude or Grok with your notes and results. Ask for one section per message. The prompt keeps numbers out of crowded sentences, groups related work by argument, bans the stock phrases detectors look for, and tells the model never to invent a citation.
- Rewrite each section with Penned. Pick Research paper in the humanizer and paste one section at a time. Penned rewrites every paragraph several times and keeps the most human-reading version that passes its fact check.
- Check facts, then the whole paper. Read each section against your results. Then check the full text, because detectors score the document as a whole, and results sections full of numbers are the hardest part.
What we measured
- A 196-word abstract drafted by Gemini with the prompt: 100% AI on GPTZero. After Penned with the automatic fact check: 4% AI, no sentences flagged.
- The prose of a full 16-page paper (about 4,100 words), rewritten section by section: read as human by GPTZero, with none of its 278 sentences flagged.
- The same paper as a 16-page PDF, with tables, figures and references, on 22 October 2026: under 20% AI on Turnitin's AI writing check, which shows only "*%" below 20%. Every number in it was checked against the original.
Scores come from Turnitin and GPTZero on the dates of our tests. Detectors change their models without notice, so check your own final text before you submit it.
Questions
Can Penned humanize a research paper?
Yes. Research papers are the hardest case for any humanizer because they are dense with numbers, terms and citations. A full 16-page paper rewritten section by section with Penned scored under 20% AI on Turnitin's AI writing check. With Penned's research-paper prompt and Penned's rewrite, a Gemini-written abstract went from 100% to 4% AI on GPTZero, with the automatic fact check on.
Will my numbers, citations and terms survive?
Penned checks every rewrite against your original and fixes changed numbers, names, citations and claims with small edits. Read the result once before you submit it; you know your results better than any tool.
Should I paste the whole paper at once?
No. Work section by section. Detectors judge the whole document, and short, number-heavy sections such as results are the hardest, so it pays to rewrite and check them one at a time.
Follow your institution's and publisher's rules on AI assistance. Penned helps your own work read naturally; it does not replace your results or your judgement.
