Privacy policy

This policy explains what information Penned ("we") collects when you use this website, why, and what you can do about it. We follow India's Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023, and we collect as little as we can.
What we collect
- Account details. Your email address, and your name and profile photo if you sign in with Google.
- Text you submit. The text you paste to rewrite or check, and the result.
- Usage records. For each request: time, type of request, word count, scores, processing time, and a shortened network address used only for rate limiting.
We do not use advertising trackers and we do not sell personal data.
Why we use it
- To produce your rewrite or detection result.
- To keep a history of your rewrites in your account, if you are signed in.
- To prevent abuse (rate limits) and to fix errors.
- To measure, in aggregate, how well the service works.
We do not use your text to train models unless you explicitly opt in to that in the future.
Who processes it for us
- Google Firebase for sign-in and storing your history.
- Modal runs our servers: the AI detector and Penned's own rewriting model. Long documents are kept there for up to 24 hours while they are rewritten, so you can collect the result.
- Groq runs the language models that check each rewrite against your original for changed facts; your text is sent to it for that purpose only.
- Vercel hosts this website.
These providers may process data outside India, under their own security and privacy commitments.
How long we keep it
Rewrite history stays in your account until you delete it or delete your account. Usage records are kept for up to 90 days. Text you submit while signed out is not stored after the response is sent, apart from the usage record.
Your rights
You can see and delete individual rewrites in the app. To get a copy of your data, correct it, or delete your account and everything in it, email penned.outreach@gmail.com. We reply within 30 days. If you are not satisfied, you may complain to the Data Protection Board of India.
Children
Penned is for people aged 13 and over. If you are under 18, please use Penned with a parent's or guardian's permission. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child under 13 has created an account, contact us and we will delete it.
Changes
If we change this policy in a way that matters, we will update the date above and tell signed-in users in the app.
